Northern Ireland was looking for revenge against the Faroes after they suffered an embarrassing 1-1 draw at home to the tiny nation. Northern Ireland turned on the style as they thumped the Faroe Islands in a great night for the Irish. Many players played well for the Irish on the night, including, Kingsley Black, Ian Dowie, Tommy Wright and most importantly Colin Clarke. It was a night that Colin Clarke scored a hat trick, which included a penalty. His three goals made him joint top goal scorer with Billy Gillespie in the history of the national football side as he now had 13 goals for his country.

Northern Ireland came into this match on the back of an easy 5-0 win over the Faroes and dominated this home encounter at Belfast against Austria as they easily won the tie 2-1. Kingsley Black scored the Irish’s first goal early on and in the second half, Ian Dowie made it 2-0 to the Irish before Austria pulled a goal back. This result now put Northern Ireland third in the group with a mathematical chance of qualifying for Euro 92.
