Northern Ireland came in to this encounter with little hope after a bad run of results, however in Katowice of Poland; they defeated a strong Polish side as the Irish played outstandingly well. The goals came by Derek Dougan and Humphries in what proved to be a convincing victory for the Irish.

After winning away in Poland, Northern Ireland were looking to now win on aggregate despite playing at home as they had recently been on the back of a 5-1 thrashing against Scotland. However Northern Ireland won this encounter 2-0 and the man of the match proved to be John Crossan, a player who had just served a three year apprenticeship in Belgium and the Netherlands league football after being exiled from the UK early in his career. In the ninth minute, John Crossan put the Irish in front. Everything got better for the Irish in the second period as Billy Bingham sealed victory for Northern Ireland.
