He commenced his football career playing for local side, Linfield before signing for Newcastle United in the year 1949, making 431 appearances from the club during his 13 years period there, leaving in 1962. He was a key member of the Newcastle team that won the 1952 FA Cup and has made 40 appearances for the Northern Ireland national football team.
